Meet Our Charter
Sustaining Quilt Guild
The Colorado Valley Quilt Guild has begun a lending project that will supply quilts paired with especially chosen books to local elementary schools for use by librarians, teachers and any other school-connected enthusiastic storytellers.
On July 17th, the Guild launched this newest project at The Texas Quilt Museum before an audience of local children and Guild members. A special reading of The Quilt Maker's Gift was presented b museum co-founder, Karey Bresenhan.
Janice Raabe, read A Far-Fetched Tale and Kathi Babock, Judy Wolff and Pat Scherer showed the attendees their donated quilts paired with the book each quilt was made to compliment.
An exhibit of six quilts and their books are showcased in the museum's hallway for the summer.
A photo album filled with most of the quilts already finished is also positioned with the quilts. Among the books that have quilts made to enhance the stories are Lois and the Grandmothers Flower Garden Quilt, Reuben and the Quilt, The Tortilla Quilt, The Pinata Quilt, Quilt of Dreams, and The Josefina Story Quilt. Quilt makers for these quilts are Brigette Mesecke, Betty Schmidt, Lana Hane, Glenda Price, JoAnne Hill, and Kathi Babock.
The Quilted Story project was overwhelmingly endorsed by the Guild members after a presentation to the Guild by a project leader form the Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild who, among many others, has adopted a quilt-literacy program within their community.
Quilts are made to compliment particular story books and are used in the reading of their partner books. The Guild provides these treasures in the hope of instilling a love of quilts as well as promoting literacy in our community.
Raabe, Guild project leader for Quilted Stories, will offer a short in-service training to each participating school prior to the school year. It is hoped that the books and quilts will be sued extensively during the school year as well as in other educational settings.
